1969 Trailswest Campster

This 1969 Trailswest Campster had been used as a hunter’s shack for many years. But other than accumulating over forty years of dirt, mildew and odor, it was basically solid. Nothing a total frame-off renovation could not remedy.

First, we completely gutted the interior—right down to the raw fiberglass walls and plywood subfloor. The shell was lifted off the frame and stripped of all attachments—pop-top, windows, lighting, vents, etc.

The frame was sandblasted, reinforced, and repainted with black anti-rust POR-15. New shocks, bearings and seals were installed. The original 14” wheels were prepped and powder-coated. The tongue area was customized to carry a propane tank and new deep-cycle battery.

Minor damage and flaws to the fiberglass shell were repaired before being painted with a combination of industrial enamel (white) and rock-resistant DuraBak (red). All new DOT wiring and lighting, utility ports and new trim were installed.

The entire interior was pressure-washed, then coated with two-part epoxy. A new subfloor was layed, then tiled with Marmoleum. Reflectix insulation and an auto upholstery fabric was fastened to the walls and ceiling. The pop-top was rebuilt and the vinyl collar was cleaned and repaired.

All new cabinetry, furniture modules and a table were built to replace the originals.

New electrical—both 120VAC and 12VDC— was run throughout the cabin to LED lights plugs and appliances. All new propane and water lines were installed and connected to the new fixtures and appliances in the galley area.

The final result? Fantastic! This Trailswest Campster is now a one-of-a-kind travel trailer—sure to see another 40 years of fun.
